THE VALUE OF A MASTER’S IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES

STUDY THE EFFECTS OF RELIGION ON HISTORY AND CULTURE

WITH AN MA IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES FROM THE MOUNT

At Mount Saint Mary’s University, we understand the transformative power of religious studies and its impact on our world. The Master of Arts in Religious Studies is deeply rooted in the values and traditions of the Mount, drawing inspiration from the broader university mission and the Spirit of the Founders, as expressed through the principles of the Mount’s founding Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet

The Master of Arts in Religious Studies program offers a transformative educational experience that combines rigorous academic study with a focus on praxis. We believe in the power of integrating theory with real-world application, empowering our students to become agents of positive change in their communities

What to Expect from the Mount’s MA in Religious Studies

Vibrant Campus Community

As a part of our on-campus community, you’ll be immersed in an enriching academic environment that fosters intellectual growth and personal development. Graduate students benefit from a close-knit and collaborative atmosphere where they can engage in meaningful discussions, forge lasting connections with fellow scholars and receive mentorship from experienced faculty members.

Real-World Perspective

We recognize that religious studies isn’t just an academic pursuit, but also a pathway to effecting positive change in the world. Bridging the gap between theory and lived experience, students are encouraged to go beyond mere intellectual exploration and engage with religious traditions, communities and social context. As a student in the program, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the practical dimensions of religion and its influence on individuals and communities.

Interdisciplinary and Interreligious Study

The MA in Religious Studies proudly embraces the Catholic intellectual tradition, providing a unique perspective on the study of religions. Mount St. Mary’s is one the few Catholic institutions offering a specific concentration in The Study of Religions.

Theology

Delve into the study of theology within a diverse and ecumenical framework. Explore courses such as “Scripture and Social Justice” “Global Christianities,” and “Theology and Technologies,” and engage in theological discourse that deepens your understanding of christian thought.

The Study of Religions

Explore various religious traditions, including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, and indigenous faiths. Courses like “Comparative Religious Ethics, “Sociology of Religion,” and “Religion, Theology, and the City of Los Angeles” equip you with a comprehensive understanding of the impact of religions on society and culture.

At the Mount, we are committed to honoring the mission and vision of our founders. As a student, you will study religion at an institution that was founded on the premise of loving thy dear neighbor without distinction and fostering the common good through service of others.

The Mount also offers a 3-year, non-residential Spiritual Direction Certificate, offering students the opportunity to build a stronger practice in holistic spirituality and spiritual direction.
