What inspired you to study Education (DHH)?

What inspired me to study special education with a focus on the deaf and hard of hearing population is my love for both speech therapy and teaching. I am excited to work with the deaf and hard of hearing population in hopes of advocating for inclusion, equality, and justice through the John Tracy Center.

When did you first get interested in the field?

My original plan as an undergraduate was to be a speech language pathologist (SLP). But, I later changed my mind, as I wanted to work with a larger group, which led me to teaching. The John Tracy Center, along with Mount Saint Mary’s University, offers a deaf and hard of hearing teaching program that puts both fields into perspective, and combines both career choices I wanted to pursue.

Why did you choose the Master of Science in Education at MSMU?

How is the Mount's EDU program helping you achieve your goals?

I went to a private school my whole life and knew that I wanted to continue my educational journey in a well-known Catholic private university where I could continue practicing my faith while studying. After receiving my undergrad at a Cal State, I knew that I wanted to transition over to a smaller university that would support me as I embark higher education.

The faculty experts at Mount Saint Mary’s University are true role-models and individuals who I one day aspire to be like. In addition, the coursework is providing me with crucial information and skills needed to succeed in my career.

What has been your most rewarding experience in the EDU program?

What advice would you give prospective students?

The most rewarding experience in the EDU program has been the field hours I’ve had with the population. I have learned so much because I am able to work with the latest technology in cochlear implants, and I believe that having a hands on learning has been by far the best way for me to learn and retain information.

If I had one piece of advice for prospective students, it would be to know that the field could take a toll on you emotionally, depending on the cases you work with. So, be ready and prepare mentally. Ultimately, I have learned so much working with the parents. But some days are tough because we work with family alongside their journey of finding out that their child is deaf or hard of hearing.
