Teaching credentials in the state of California are required to teach in public K-12 schools. They also provide the foundation and formal training that is needed to build a successful teaching career.
There are many reasons why you need to earn specific teaching credentials in the industry today. Let's take a look at three of them:
Start Your Career as an Educator
If you think you want to be a teacher or want to make a career change, and you are ready to get started with the option to teach in both private and public settings, you will need to get the appropriate preliminary credential right from the beginning.
Expand Your Career Options
If you're already a teacher working for a private or charter school and love what you do, but would like to give yourself the option to work for a public school, then a preliminary credential can get you there. Or, if you’re already a preliminary credentialed teacher but still need to clear your credential, an induction program might be an appropriate option.
Further Specialize in a Specific Area
If you are already a credentialed teacher working in the field and you want to specialize in an additional area, such as special education, a second credential is what you need.
While obtaining a master’s degree in addition to your teaching credentials is optional, there are many reasons you should invest in a graduate education degree.
One of the most tried-and-true ways of ensuring that you are developing the necessary skills needed to jumpstart a lifelong career in teaching is through graduate-level education. There are a number of data-backed reasons to obtain a master’s degree in education:
Job Security
Educators who hold a master’s degree are more likely to have job security in the field and are less likely to experience unemployment.
More Opportunities
Those working in education with a graduate degree will have more opportunities to ascend in the field and obtain higher-level administration roles like Principal or Vice Principal.
What is the Current Job Outlook for Teachers?
The job outlook for teachers is bright. There will always be a critical need for skilled, knowledgeable educators who can make a difference in the lives of the next generation.
Teaching is an evergreen profession — meaning that educators will always have the potential to secure a job in the field.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics also asserts that teachers will experience approximately a 5 percent job growth rate, which is about as fast as the average career growth for all occupations.
