7 QUESTIONS TO ASK AS A TRANSFER STUDENT
If you’re considering transferring colleges, here are several direct questions to ask yourself (and the college you’re considering) before you decide to make the switch.
1. Why do I want to transfer to another college?
Think about what’s driving you to consider a change. Is it the academic programs, the campus life, the location, costs or something else entirely? Your motivations might be a little clearer if you’re transferring from a community college than another four-year institution, but reflection can help in both cases.
2. How many of my credits will transfer?
You’ve worked hard for the college credits you’ve earned. Take time to understand the transfer credit policy at any school you’re considering. Will they accept your earned credits or will you have to take extra courses?
Not all policies are as generous as others, so choosing a university and program that accepts as many of the credits you’ve already earned will help you stay on track to graduate and avoid extra costs. If attending a community college, learn more about articulation agreements between your college and four-year institutions.
3. What are the admission requirements for transfer students?
Are there conditions you need to meet to transfer? Make sure you’re prepared for any prerequisite courses or GPA requirements for transfer students before applying.
4. How will transferring colleges affect my finances?
Crunch some numbers. How do tuition and fees compare? Will you be eligible for financial aid at the new institution?
Note: Fill out the FAFSA to learn about your federal financial aid options.
5. How long will it take to complete my degree?
Time is money. Determine how many requirements toward graduation are needed before you transfer.
6. Is the academic program more aligned with my goals?
Have a close look at the program you’re interested in. Will it help you in your career or do you risk missing out on something you currently have?
Think about the quality, opportunities, content and faculty in comparison to your current academic program.
7. How will the campus culture and resources impact my overall experience?
Think about how you’ll fit into the culture. Do the activities, support services, clubs and the feel of the school match your expectations?
Ask admission counselors if there are any student groups or activities specifically for transfer students or if there are extra advising opportunities you can take advantage of to ensure you’re on the right track to graduate.
